Resolana is a community-based nonprofit organization that provides holistic, gender-sensitive, rehabilitative programming for incarcerated women.
Resolana builds a safe and challenging learning community behind the walls of the criminal justice system, where women can use their time in custody to acquire the skills, tools and resources for a positive reintegration into the lives of their families and communities.

Our mission: | to educate and empower incarcerated women |
Women are the fastest growing segment of the burgeoning jail and prison population in the United States. Since 1980, female numbers have increased at twice the rate of men's. Dallas County Jail, the seventh largest jail in the US, reports that an astonishing 21% of the individuals booked into the jail were women - that's more than 21,000 females!
Few incarcerated women have committed violent offenses; their primary pathway to incarceration is substance abuse. Poverty, trauma, mental health issues and addiction are interrelated problems in their lives - and these problems are often exacerbated by their incarceration.
Evidence shows that gender-sensitive rehabilitative programs that address the issues underlying addiction can make a positive difference in the lives of these marginalized women. But in a correctional system designed for and dominated by men, women remain an underserved population.
Resolana provides holistic woman-centered programming to incarcerated women at Dallas County Jail, turning their time in custody into an opportunity to acquire the insight and self-discipline, skills and confidence to turn their lives around. For many, it is the best - or the only - opportunity they will ever have.
About our name Resolana... | The Spanish term la Resolana refers to the sunny side of a building or plaza, a protected place where the warmth absorbed by the adobe walls draws people to gather together and talk. Traditionally, the village elders (called 'los resolaneros' or sun seekers) spent their afternoons seated against these "warming walls," exchanging news with passersby, swapping stories, and passing on their cultural wisdom to the community.
Our intention is to create such a space for women behind the walls of the criminal justice system, a place of learning, self-expression and community.
