Let’s redefine being “tough on crime.”

In jail, sleeping the days away and watching daytime TV are a breeze. Participating in programming to address your issues and planning for a new way of life is work.

Let’s understand the population.
• 80% of incarcerated women report the experience of violence or sexual assault by intimates.
• Rates of medical problems, mental illness, and co-occurring substance abuse are far higher than those of men.
• A majority present long-standing histories of being victims of violence, sexual abuse, and corresponding trauma.
Let’s recognize the consequences of doing nothing.
• The rate of female incarceration is increasing at twice the rate of men; an increase primarily associated with poverty and drug use.
• Most incarcerated women are mothers who live with multiple minor children; children who are 8-10 times more likely than their peers to end up in jail or prison themselves.
Let’s involve the community.

Government can’t do it alone, and a Sheriff’s responsibility with regard to the jail is safe housing - not reduced recidivism. Through Resolana, volunteer to participate in jail programming, become a mentor, or make a donation.

Together, Let's Break the Cycle of Incarceration

Resolana is a nonprofit agency providing gender-specific programming to female offenders, beginning inside the Dallas County Jail and continuing through reentry into the community. Our goals are to increase readiness for change on the inside, increase utilization of existing community resources on the outside, and reduce recidivism.

When Mandy talks about breaking the cycle of incarceration, her words have instant credibility. In 2007, she participated in Resolana classes at the reentry level. Now she takes time from her busy life as a working mom to serve as a role model for Resolana participants at Dallas County Jail.

About Our Name

The Spanish term la Resolana refers to the sunny side of a building or plaza, a protected place where the warmth absorbed by the adobe walls draws people to gather together and talk. Traditionally, the village elders (called ‘los resolaneros’ or ‘sun seekers’) spent their afternoons seated against these "warming walls," exchanging news with passersby, swapping stories, and passing on their cultural wisdom to the community. Our intention is to create such a space for women behind the walls of the criminal justice system, a place of learning, self-expression and community.
