In the spring of 2009, RESOLANA celebrated an important milestone: the first class in our own sparkling new classroom in the recently opened Kays Tower at Dallas County Jail . . . and the beginning of an exciting period of growth and transition for RESOLANA.
In late 2008, RESOLANA was invited to develop and implement a comprehensive program for women in a dedicated program area in the Kays Tower, the new addition to the jail's Lew Sterrett facility. This invitation represented a powerful endorsement of our work at Dallas County Jail and an amazing opportunity for RESOLANA to dramatically expand the services offered to female inmates, building on a small but robust existing program.
Previously classroom space was so scarce that RESOLANA was limited to only six hours of classes per week. Now women who want to spend their time in custody in productive and positive ways have a lot more options to choose from. Since RESOLANA moved into its dedicated classroom in April, classes which could previously be offered only on a rotating basis have gradually been integrated into a regular weekly schedule and programming has expanded to about 16-20 hours per week.
Offerings include twice weekly psychoeducational classes utilizing
the evidence-based Seeking Safety curriculum, taught by a professional
therapist. Life skills classes, like Job Readiness and Anger Management,
are on the schedule as well as Yoga, 5 Rhythms Meditation and InterPlay.
Monday and Friday nights feature a continually changing medley of our
always-popular creativity workshops. Therapists from Family Place lead
a weekly class for survivors of childhood abuse or domestic violence.
An AA meeting is held every Wednesday evening in our classroom. We
take special pride in the fact that a former RESOLANA participant recruited
and organized the team that brings in the meetings.
The new programming has been welcomed by the women inmates
with gratitude and enthusiasm. As we settle into our new schedule and plan
for additional services in 2010, it is exciting to see our circle of
women helping women growing ever larger.

“The RESOLANA group does a superb job with the female inmates with every class and workshop they do from Art to Yoga! They are the most popular and demanded program we have. We are very lucky to have them on board with us!”

“Today I am very emotional. I am scared that I will be sentenced to prison for a long time because I made a mistake. I know that I have changed simply because of this class and I just want to thank you.”
